How to Choose an Estate Sale Company
Pick a local company that will walk through the house in person, explain its fees in writing, tell you what happens to leftover items, explain how you'll be paid, and talk to you plainly. Ask these questions of every company you're considering, including us.
Questions to ask
- Who runs the sale day to day? Will the owner be involved?
- How do you charge? Commission, minimums, and any extra fees, all in writing.
- What happens to items that don't sell? Are they donated, hauled away, or left behind? Does that cost extra? (With us, haul-away is included.)
- How do you advertise? Online listings, an email list, signs?
- How do you price? Based on what items actually sell for?
- How do I get paid?
- Are you insured?
- Can you handle vehicles, firearms, or high-value items?
- What areas do you serve, and how soon can you schedule?
Red flags
- Promising a dollar figure before seeing the house
- No written agreement
- Vague answers about what happens to leftovers
- Pushing you to sell them everything for a flat price on the spot
- Asking you to throw things out before they've seen them
