Estate Sale vs. Auction, Garage Sale, Consignment or Donation

Short answer: if a house is full and you need it emptied, an estate sale is usually the most complete option. Everything gets sold in one go, right in the home, and with us the leftovers get hauled away too. Other options can make sense in particular situations. Here's an honest comparison.

OptionGood forDownsides
Estate sale (what we do)Whole houses. Lots of furniture, tools, kitchen, garage and household items. Executors and families who want it handled.Needs enough items to draw buyers. Happens in the home over a few days.
Online auctionSpecialty items and collectibles that buyers will bid on from anywhere.Photographing and listing every lot takes time. Pickup and shipping take coordinating. (180 Estate Sales online auctions are coming but not live yet. Join the list to hear when.)
Garage / yard saleA few tables of stuff you're clearing out yourself. All the work is yours. Pricing is guesswork. You're left with whatever doesn't sell.
ConsignmentA few nice furniture or decor pieces.Only takes what the shop wants. Slow payout. Doesn't empty a house.
Facebook Marketplace / CraigslistSelling a handful of items yourself.No-shows, haggling, strangers coming to the door one item at a time.
DonatingSpeed, when the items don't have much resale value. You give up whatever value is there. Charities won't take everything.
Junk removalWhatever's left once the selling is done.Usable items go away without being sold. (With us, haul-away after the sale is included, through Dunk The Junk.)

Estate sale vs. estate liquidation

People use the two terms almost the same way. "Estate liquidation" is the broader idea of turning a household's contents into cash and clearing the house. An estate sale is the most common way to do it.

What about a company buying everything at once?

Some companies offer a single flat purchase price for the whole contents of a house. It can be fast, but you'll generally get less than the items would bring one by one at a sale. Ask questions and compare before you decide.
