Why I Started an Estate Sale Company in Carson City (and Why It's Called 180)
Hey everyone, I'm Layton. I own 180 Estate Sales located in Carson City. This is the first post on our blog, so I figured I'd start with the basics. Who I am, why I do this, and what the heck the name means.
The short version
It all started with my mom. When I was a kid, we used to garage sale and thrift together. Then I grew up and made mistakes and led a dumb life til I was 32. Then 2020 happened. I felt like I needed to make a change in my life. So I started searching for new meaning.
I looked back on my childhood and by 2022 I rediscovered the love for the hunt. So I started reselling. Finding treasures and getting them to people who loved them.
Well along that path was estate sales. At first I didn't like them. They were too pricey or everything just felt weird with it being someone's stuff, but the more estate sales I went to, the more I noticed the other side of it. Behind every sale there's a family. Sometimes they lost a parent. Sometimes Mom and Dad are moving into a smaller place or assisted living. Sometimes it's someone downsizing for their own move. And almost every time, they're overwhelmed. A whole house full of stuff, a deadline, and no idea where to start.
So I started 180 Estate Sales to help with that part. I get to do the treasure hunting I love, and the family gets someone to take the whole job off their plate.
So why "180"?
People ask this a lot, haha. It's pretty simple. We turn your estate around. You go from a house full of stuff and a ton of stress to an empty house ready for renting or listing and being able to move on. That's a 180.
A 360 would just bring you right back to the mess you started with. Nobody wants that.
Why Carson City
Carson City is home, I moved here from Reno in 2021 to be closer to my then 9 year old daughter. I live here, I work here, and this is where the business is based. That matters more than you'd think for an estate sale.
When you're local, a walkthrough can usually happen without a long wait. Setup days and sale days here don't carry a travel charge. And I know the town. Carson has everything from the older houses on the historic west side, to newer subdivisions on the east and north ends, to acreage out in Washoe Valley and toward Lakeview. A lot of these homes have full garages, shops, and decades of furniture, tools and collections. That's basically my favorite kind of house to work.
We also go further out. We travel anywhere within about 3 hours of Carson City, so Reno, Carson Valley, Dayton, Tahoe, Fallon, and even over the hill into California. But Carson is home base.
What we actually do
Here's the quick rundown of a sale with us:
- We come out and do a free walkthrough and talk about your timeline.
- We sort, set up, and stage the house so it shops well.
- We price everything based on what it's actually selling for right now.
- We advertise the sale and send it to our early-access email list.
- Our crew runs the sale days.
- When it's over, whatever doesn't sell gets donated where we can, and the rest gets hauled away by our sister company, Dunk The Junk. That's included.
Cleaning is optional if you want it. Cars, trucks and trailers can be sold too.
If you want the full step by step, I wrote it all out on our how estate sales work page.
What I want this blog to be
I'm not a writer. I'm a guy who runs estate sales. So this blog is going to be pretty plain. I'm going to write about the towns we work in, the stuff that sells, the stuff people throw away that they shouldn't, and the questions families ask me over and over.
If something helps you, great. If you have a question I haven't answered, call me at (775) 683-1965 and just ask. You can also see more about us on the Carson City estate sales page.
Thanks for reading. More soon.
