Before Your Estate Sale: A Simple Checklist
The most important rule is don't throw anything away until we've seen it. Take out what the family wants to keep, secure papers and valuables, and leave the rest to us. Sorting, cleaning up, and pricing are our job.
Do
- Take what family wants to keep. Do it before setup starts. Once it's priced, it's for sale.
- Remove or lock up personal papers. That means wills, bank and tax records, photos, and anything with Social Security numbers.
- Secure cash, jewelry you're keeping, and firearms. We'll talk with you about anything you want sold. Firearms can be sold too, handled in accordance with all applicable laws.
- Find titles and keys for vehicles, trailers, and safes.
- Tell us about anything special: collections, family history, items you think are valuable.
- Cancel or forward the mail, and keep utilities on through the sale.
Don't
- Don't throw out "junk." Old tools, costume jewelry, kitchen gadgets, vintage clothes, linens, records, old electronics, video games, cameras, and holiday decorations all sell. (See the kinds of treasures we find.)
- Don't donate first. Let the sale happen, and then what's left can be donated or hauled away.
- Don't deep-clean or repair. Buyers expect estate condition.
- Don't hold your own garage sale first. It picks off the items that draw buyers to the main sale.
The week of the sale
Our crew takes over the house for setup. Clients can't be at the house while our team is working or during the sale. Many families find that easier anyway. If you're out of town, a lockbox key handoff works fine.
After the sale
We donate what we can, giving as much as possible directly to people who need it. The rest is hauled away (included), the house is broom-ready, and cleaning is optional on request. See estate cleanouts.
